Its been a busy September in Languages

Posted on: 26/09/2018

September has been a busy month for the Languages Department at Capital! On Tuesday 18th September, the MFL Enrichment Programme had its launch party for this year with an international themed bake-off. Students in Years 9-11 were able to sample cakes, bread and biscuits from different countries, and learn about other cultures. Congratulations to Ms Penn and Ms Joonus whose bakes were voted best by the students!

On Wednesday 26th September we celebrated the European Day of Languages. Staff from across the school contributed their favourite foreign words for a display which can be seen outside the languages classrooms. Over thirty staff participated and over twenty languages were represented including Yoruba, Farsi, Jamaican Patois, Irish and Creole! After school students were also able to attend an MFL Enrichment Programme session where they could find out about teachers’ experiences living in different countries. Ms Moisseeva introduced us all to Québécois French, Mr Skinner spoke about living in Luxemburg, Mr Aristide about growing up in Gaudeloupe and Ms Greenwood about living in Austria.

On Tuesday 2nd October there will be another MFL Enrichment Programme event; a screening of the film Berlin ’36 which is based on the true story of a Jewish athlete competing in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The film will have English subtitles so all MFL students in Years 9-11 are welcome to come.
