PE, School Sports & Club Links (PESSCL)OBJECTIVESAll pupils are entitled to a stimulating, exciting and relevant Physical and Sports Education. The elements of the programs of study reflect the changing emphasis of the delivery of the key motor skills and sport specific education both within the teaching and learning but also as a philosophy for long term achievement, confidence and excellence. The emphasis lies within the aim of maximising the potential of each individual. We wish to engage the students in the process of decision making within specific sports and use this as a method of accessing a healthy lifestyle. We are committed to developing the creative and curios mind which will contribute to the planning, reasoning and observation of both motor and sport skills at all levels. We will give access, to all of the students within the 14-19-age range, to accredited leadership, vocational and academic qualifications. We will use existing and new links with Institutions of Higher Education to enhance the promotion of Sport as a career option and in the coaching of the Academy students through Sports Leadership Awards. It is our aim to raise the standards of achievement and skill within Physical Education and Sport as well as impacting on the rest of the school, through inspirational motivation and cross curricular links, particularly in numeracy and literacy. Through an extensive enrichment and Out of School Hours program we will encourage all students in the desire to participate in physical activities. STRATEGIESThe Physical Education program will focus on the refinement of the eight fundamental skills of agility, balance, co-ordination, speed, kinaesthetic awareness, buoyancy, gliding and striking. These skilled will be learnt using a broad and differentiated range of activities and practices. We will embrace high levels of fun, excitement and success into our teaching and learning experiences, so that our students may become equipped, to be confident of their bodies and thrive on using them when taking considered and appropriate risks. We will through the curriculum provision, enrichment activities, Personal, Health and Social Education [PHSE] and Out of School Hours Learning [OSHL] seeks to develop students’ awareness and understanding of the importance of an active and healthy lifestyle. We will aim to infuse the key issues of diet, respiratory fitness, and the effects of exercise, emergency life skills and life habits into the knowledge base of the students so they make reasoned, logical and intelligent choices about their health. We will ensure that the values of Physical and Sports Education are embedded within the enrichment and core curriculum provision, which will provide further opportunities for our students to take advantage of using sport as a vehicle for success. Through the involvement of competitive situations the students will be encouraged to appreciate the concepts of fair play and integrity. They will be taught how to become honest, honourable and reliable competitors who engage in good sporting behaviour in the face of victory or defeat. They will all follow leadership and accredited courses, which acknowledge their strengths and celebrate their commitment to the Primary Schools Program. Each student will be encouraged to teach, coach and lead small groups of students in a range of warm ups and skills programs and for the advanced students take the opportunity to hold a responsible role within the primary school, as an assistant community leader, working along side Primary Teachers and coaches in delivering the Physical Education lessons and clubs. As learners they will be committed to the grouping and inclusion policies of the school, which will contribute positively to their understanding of cultural, genetic and religious differences and help them to develop an appreciation of support, acceptance and belonging. Within the learning environment, which will range from the swimming pool to the playing field and Do Jo to the studio we will ensure high expectations of behaviour and involvement. The learning conditions will become increasingly complex as the students mature, providing them with opportunities to use a wide range of physical, mental and emotional skills and intelligence to strive for improvement. The students will be closely tracked and monitored to ensure students are achieving their ‘Personal Best’. Close consideration will be given to the Talented Athletes and athletes who enter onto the Junior Athlete Programme to ensure full support throughout their quest for sporting excellence. Any acceleration will be identified and appropriate steps taken to ensure that pathways of success are made available. We are fully committed to the development of all National Governing Body identified, county or National Club sports people and young talented athletes who we have identified through our Sports Aptitude Testing. We are entitled to take 10% per intake on Sports Aptitude and this will be completed for students wishing to be considered through a battery of tests in the January before entry into year 7. IMPLEMENTATIONAll students will follow the National Curriculum recommendations for Physical Education, covering broad aspects of Athletics, Dance [within the Expressive Arts provision], and Gymnastics, Swimming [this will resume on completion of the new Willesden Sports Centre], Games and Outdoor and Adventure activities. The delivery and learning within these key areas will be a combination of skill education and sport specific understanding. The learning of thinking skills and creative play, including strategy analysis will support this Physical and Sport Education curriculum. It is our aim to provide the students at the Capital City Academy with a program of study, which embraces the dream, spirit, adventure, fun, and expectations, which reaches above success and strives for excellence. To enable full access to the whole school strategies, the students will engage in a project of learning which is supported through the Global Institute for Student Aspirations. All students will have access to extensive and sophisticated I.C.T. learning aids, in the form of digital cameras, performance analysis packages, and demonstration materials. This assists in development of observational skills as well as performance skills and is used within the assessment of Physical and Sport Education. The students who come to the Academy as identified talented performers are placed on the Junior Athlete Program, which ensures that all interested and involved agencies and parties of the athlete are in communication regarding the well being and support of the athlete. Students who graduate from the Junior Athlete Programme move into the ELITE Athlete Programme where they are engaged in supervision, coaching and mentoring roles for the Junior Athletes. Students who throughout their education at the Academy become identified will also be eligible to join the program and experience curriculum modification, I.C.T. support, on line learning and specialist workshops supporting a performance lifestyle. The focus sports at the Academy are Athletics, Basketball, and Tennis with Judo as the community sport. The commitment is to provide a clear and uninterrupted pathway, which will stretch from the Primary School to the National Arena. Through the School Sports Partnership, which is centred at the Academy the raising of standards and OSHL will be the origin for the organic development of talent. Links with national level clubs in all of the focus sports have improved the quality of coaching which is available and ensures that access to national and international performance is available. All of the sports clubs are committed to outreach work within the primary feeder schools and community groups. All of the Physical Education and coaching staff are supported in maintaining their personal sports activity and staying at the forefront of current thinking in the teaching, learning, safety, rules and coaching of Physical and Sports Education. Through Continued Professional Development [CPD], residential conferences and seminars the creative and imaginative ideas of the team are strengthened and become part of the ethos of success. Through the creation and evolution of a Brent Strategy for Physical and Sports Education the school competitions, festivals and meeting forums have seen an increase in the participation, progress and development of sport within the Borough. Capital City Academy has played an integral part in this improvement and continues to set standards and pave the way for innovation within the Borough and wider Educational community. Capital City Academy is involved in the development of teaching Physical and Sport Education across the Borough as part of a Professional Delivery Network which assists in the work of neighbouring Primary and Secondary Schools. Close working relations between the two partnerships has been established and a joined up thinking process for sharing and unification instigated. The Academy is the centre of excellence in the field of Gifted and Talented identification and is active in the partnership with London Gifted and Talented acting as the host for the identification and tracking of talented ‘not yet identified’ students in primary schools. We are the venue for Talent Performance Classes and seek to establish best practice models throughout the partnership, borough and wider London community. The Individual Education Plans used throughout the school reflects targets set with a sports emphasis for able students. The continued assessment of the student’s skills, performance, planning, observation, creativity, fitness, knowledge and understanding will contribute to self-assessment and the maintenance of progress. The curriculum reviews are used to communicate the focus for improvement and support learning to parents and carers. We are fully committed to the achievements of each student through and with the networks of club links in extending their levels of skill beyond the expectations of the national average across all age groups and throughout all courses, sports and skills. | |
