Capital City Academy opened in September 2003 with a maximum admission of 196. We are a new and exciting school for pupils and parents from Brent and neighbouring boroughs.
Academies are a new type of government school. Partly funded by sponsorship, they serve the community, offering places to students of all abilities and raising standards and expectations. Capital City Academy is an independent state school that does not charge for the education provided and has no religious affiliation. Capital City Academy is surrounded by playing fields and parkland next to Willesden Sport Centre in North West London (NW10). Buses 206 & 266 pass nearby; provision is being made for cyclists and the Academy has a safe parking and dropping-off zone. Capital City Academy’s main purpose is to achieve the highest academic standards across a full range of subjects. In addition, the school has specialist strength in physical education, sport and the Arts. In 2005 the school won an Artsmark Silver Award. We foster and celebrate success, building confidence and raising standards across the curriculum. Capital City Academy aims to:-
• Set the highest possible academic standards, working in partnership with parents and encouraging all students to achieve their personal best.
• Serve the community, providing a first class free education for students and making our superb facilities available to local people.
• Provide excellent facilities to students of all abilities, including those with disabilities or special educational needs; high quality support for all whose first or home language is not English.
• Show respect for all, regardless of faith, language or ethnic background.
• Provide state-of-the-art facilities which stimulate enjoyment in learning and a desire to succeed.
• Use sporting and artistic success to build confidence and team spirit, teaching leadership skills and raising standards across the curriculum.
• Help students to develop as rounded individuals and valuable members of our diverse society.
Each student is expected to achieve their “personal best” and targets are set to stretch and challenge all. We believe that the more we expect of young people – in all respects – the more they will succeed. All subjects are important with the Academy. Students are encouraged to take examinations early if they are ready for them. This includes examinations in their own language which we support through our strong community links.
Year 7 We work closely with Year 6 teachers so that progress is continuous. The school year starts with an induction programme to ensure that students feel happy in themselves and with others enabling them to work as a team. A year system ensures that all students enjoy appropriate care and support. All students have personal targets with progress checked by a learning advisor.
At Key Stage 3 (KS3) the emphasis is on breadth and balance. Students study the National Curriculum core subjects of English, Science, Mathematics, Physical Education, ICT and Religious Education; alongside the Arts, Humanities and Languages. Higher achieving students are given a fast track programme to ensure they are fully stretched.
Key Stage 4 (KS4) offers students the chance to specialise, whilst continuing to cover a core range of National Curriculum subjects which will include PE as an accredited subject. A wide range of vocational courses are offered.
The Sixth Form offers a full range of academic and vocational courses in partnership with other South Brent schools. Capital City Academy is equipped as a ‘state-of-the-art’ 21st century school. At least three computers are in every general classroom and in addition to the ICT teaching areas, our Open Learning Centres are equipped with PCs and are available all day. There is a ratio of one PC for every three students. Arrangements are made for Anywhere, Anytime Learning with students able to access course materials on-line when not at school. All students have the opportunity to achieve a qualification in ICT by the end of KS3.
The Academy term and holiday dates are the same as other local schools. Parents receive termly progress reports. The school week is longer than usual with extra learning activities scheduled on most afternoons. Students wear a specially designed uniform. This is functional and modern. The Academy provides a highly attractive and superbly equipped environment. The design maximises energy conservation and special attention is given to security and disabled access. The facilities include a purpose built theatre, three performance or exhibition spaces and a specialist suite of art, dance, drama and music studios as well as superb provision for sport. The Academy is a learning community with an ethos to reflect this. We expect an atmosphere which is calm and purposeful where all feel secure. We place strong emphasis on high standards of behaviour and consideration for others.
Students are expected to respect themselves, peers, staff and their environment and enjoy mutual respect, tolerance and understanding. Students have opportunities to develop and show leadership. Citizenship study is an important part of everyone’s experience. To help students get as much as possible from their time at school, a wide range of additional learning opportunities are provided. Students will be involved in: - Sport (exercise, recreation, training, outdoor pursuits, competitions, school teams).
- ICT (skills instruction as needed and special projects including managing the Academy web-site).
- Homework club and study support.
- Arts, cultural and recreational activities.
Before and after school the Open Learning Centres, sports facilities and PCs will be available for students’ use. Capital City Academy’s international outlook will be strengthened by visits, internet connections and school twinning links. Our facilities will be widely available to local people and community groups outside of school hours. A special range of activities will be available for parents of students at the Academy. We are working to establish close links with a whole range of local groups and organisations, particularly local schools. Capital City Academy uses a Fair Banding Scheme to ensure that the school admits students of all abilities.
After the admission of students with Statements of Special Educational Needs (SEN), all applicants for Year 7 will be asked to attend the school on Saturday 6th or Saturday 13th January 2007 to take a test of verbal and non verbal reasoning.
Based on the test scores, applicants will be placed in four bands:
• Those with the best 25% of test scores. • Those with the second 25% of test scores. • Those with the third 25% of test scores. • Those with the fourth 25% of test scores.
Within each band, places will be allocated using the following criteria:
1. Up to 10% of students will be admitted on the basis of aptitude in sport and dance using specified tests.
2. Students ‘looked after’ by the Brent LEA (i.e. Children in Public Care).
3. Students for whom it is essential to be admitted to a specific school because of special circumstances to do with significant medical needs or social needs.
4. Students whose siblings currently attend the school and who will continue to do so on the date of admission.
5. Proximity to the school using straight-line measurement.
Capital City Academy is heavily oversubscribed in all year groups. A waiting list is maintained in order of the admissions criteria above. |
