Aims and Philosophy Through the study of a foreign language, pupils understand and appreciate different countries, cultures, people and communities; they begin to think of themselves as citizens of the world as well as of the UK. Pupils also learn about the basic structures of language. They explore the similarities and differences between the foreign language they are learning and English or another language, and learn how language can be manipulated and applied in different ways. Their listening, reading and memory skills improve, and their speaking and writing become more accurate. The development of these skills, together with pupils' knowledge and under-standing of the structure of language, lay the foundation for future study of other languages. Highlights of our year - Double Club German, French and Spanish with Arsenal Football Club - Summer term trip to France, Germany or Spain - Pupils signed up to German LetterNet penpal network - The Young Language Leaders Award (the first school in London to offer this in 2006) - Primary Language Festival led by Young Language Leaders - Spring term visit to a Spanish restaurant - Partnership with a German school - Trips to cinemas to implement our cross curricular projects Extra-curricular activities - French, German and Spanish after-school clubs for Key Stage 3 pupils - Booster classes for Key Stage 4 pupils - German cookery club - Latin classes - Lunchtime Scrabble club Facilities Each language has a dedicated classroom equipped with an interactive whiteboard with surround-sound systems.
