Choosing What to Study at Capital City Academy

AS/A2 COURSES

‘A' levels are normally divided into two one-year programmes. Students will study an AS level in the first year and A2 in the second year. The AS qualification is a free-standing qualification; examinations are taken during the first year. Students do not have to continue on to the A2 programme in the following year. However, a full ‘A' level qualification is only gained after passes at both AS and A2 level. Students cannot take A2 without the appropriate AS level.

A full course usually consists of four AS level subjects in the first year and three A2 courses in the final year. However, some able students may take more than four AS levels and more than three A2 courses.

BTEC Nationals

The BTEC National is a unit-based specialist qualification that focuses on particular aspects of employment within the vocational sector. As such the award offers a qualification which can extend study and provide vocational emphasis for learners. It is equivalent to one or two GCE A levels depending on whether students follow an award or a certificate and is graded pass, merit or distinction (P, M, D).

BTEC First Diploma

A BTEC First Diploma is a practical, work-related course. Students learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.

It introduces learners to particular areas of employment and provides a good basis to go on to a more advanced work-related qualification.

A BTEC First Diploma is equivalent to four GCSEs grades A*- C and is taken as a full-time course.
