Science In the secondary school, science is compulsory from eleven (Key Stage 3) to sixteen (Key Stage 4). Science is a dynamic and engaging subject at CCA. Science involves observing and questioning the world around us. Through experiments and investigations, we can test theories to either prove or disprove ideas. Science is always changing. Almost on a daily basis in the media, new advances in Genetics, Materials and Space are being made. Science is also a powerful tool from selling the latest brand of products on our shelves to adding weight to controversial arguments e.g. “Should we experiment on animals to find cures for illnesses and diseases in humans?” and “Are mobile phones safe?” to “Should scientists be doing research into designer babies?”
Science is often thought provoking and controversial, and so at CCA we encourage the pupils to see that science can and has been used rightly as well as for controversial or wrong reasons. In Years 7, 8 and 9 (Key Stage 3) a wide range of scientific work is undertaken which involves the four main areas of the National Curriculum: 1. Sc1 Scientific enquiry (Investigations / The Scientific Method) 2. Sc2 Life processes and living things (Biology) 3. Sc3 Materials and their properties (Chemistry) 4. Sc4 Physical processes (Physics) A varied number of experiments are undertaken at Key Stage 3 (Ages 11-14), Key stage 4 (Ages 14-16) and Key Stage 5 (Ages 16-19) including the use of ICT (Information & Communication Technology) to generate interest whilst focussing on literacy by the use of a variety text, discussion, and audio visual material. Homework is regularly set and this is both to encourage independent work as well as providing other assessment opportunities. Help with homework may be found here. |
