HumanitiesKey Stage 4 - Year 10 and Year 11GCSE HistoryGCSE History is an interesting and challenging subject. Students follow the AQA Modern World History specification B. During the course students develop their ability to analyse and interpret a range of sources whilst cementing a core knowledge and understanding of key historical events. The course is examined by: Two written examinations Two pieces of coursework. Coursework will consist of two written assignments, investigating areas that we are not studying for the examinations. The two assignments count for 25% of your total GCSE grade and will be between 1250 and 1500 words in length. During the course of the GCSE we will also complete 2 “in depth studies”. Along with studying for the exam we will investigate historical techniques and good practice, developing skills that will prove useful in every area of your future academic careers! Autumn | 1) Why did Europe go to war in 1914? Content Focus: a) The Alliance System, the Arms Race, the Moroccan Crisis 1905/1911, the Bosnian Crisis, Sarajevo and the July Crisis, the Schlieffen Plan. 2) Britain in WW1. Content Focus: b) Trench Warfare, the Western Front, the Battle of the Somme, New Technology, the War at Sea, the Role of the British Empire. | Spring | 3) The End of the War and its Impact Content Focus: c) The Paris Peace Conference, Woodrow Wilson, David Lloyd George, Georges Clemenceau, Main Terms of Treaty of Versailles, Territorial Changes, Military Restrictions and War Guilt and Reparations. 4) The League of Nations. Content Focus: d) Membership, Organisations Role in the World, Peacekeeping Role, Crisis in Manchuria (1931-1932), the Abyssinian Crisis (1935-36) | Summer | GCSE Coursework Assignment 1 is concerned with SELECTION, ORGANISATION and DEPLOYMENT of knowledge. This will help you analyse and explain; - Events, people, changes and issues studied
- Key features and characteristics of the period and societies studied.
Assignment 2 is primarily concerned with: - The use of historical sources. Comprehension, analysis, evaluation and interpretation (tools of the trade).
- How and why historical events, people situations and changes have been interpreted.
- How different interpretations can be represented and seen in different ways (why those who don’t study history tend to make the same mistakes).
