Humanities

Key Stage 4 - Year 10 and Year 11

GCSE Geography

GCSE Geography is an exciting and challenging subject. Students follow the AQA A specification. During the course students develop their knowledge, understanding and skills in preparation for the examinations.

The course is examined in three parts:

Paper 1 contributes to 40% of the total marks and is based on physical geography topics and skills

Paper 2 contributes to 35% of the total marks and is based on human geography coursework accounts for 25% of the total marks and is based in a field work investigation.

Please note that whilst the content covered in each topic will remain the same, the order of teaching may change in years 10 and 11.

The six main topics are divided into key ideas which are subsequently broken down into key questions and concepts.

Year 10

Key Dates

End of Year Exams - 23-27 May 2005

 

Autumn

Students are given an introduction to the course and an outline of the topics covered over the two years.

Tectonic Activity

Key ideas:

  • The Earth’s  crust is unstable and creates hazards.

 

  • The interaction between people and the environments and hazards created by tectonic activity.

Ecosystems

Key ideas:

  • Globally, different ecosystems can be recognised.

 

  • The interaction between people and ecosystems.

Spring

Coasts

Key ideas:

  • The Earth’s crust is modified by coastal processes which result in distinctive landforms.
     
  • The interaction between people and coastal environments.

Summer

Settlement

Key ideas:

  • Settlements vary in site, size, function and structure.
     
  • Urbanisation is a global phenomenon and presents challenges to human populations.

 

 

Year 11 

Key Dates

Friday 24th September  - Fieldtrip to North Kensington

 

Autumn

Settlement topic and coursework.

The first part of the term is spent completing the Settlement topic and the GCSE Geography coursework.

Development

  • Contrasts in development are related to economic, environmental, social and political conditions.
     
  • Trade and aid in MEDCs and LEDCs and its consequences.

Spring

The first part of the Spring term is spent completing the Development topic
 
Industry

Key ideas:
  • Industry as a system
     
  • Industrial activity can be classified.
     
  • Industrial location is influenced by many factors.
     
  • Industrial changes may have both advantages and disadvantages.

Summer

Revision and exam preparation.
