EnglishUndoubtedly English is the key element in accessing the whole curriculum. It focuses on three areas: Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening. Each scheme of work conjures up exciting possibilities for every student, giving them the opportunity to write in different styles, read a variety of texts and engage in lively debate! In line with the National Curriculum, we ensure that our students in Years 7, 8 and 9 have access to the following key areas. 1. Pre and post 1914 Drama and Prose 2. Shakespeare 3. Creative Writing 4. Media 5. Non-Fiction 6. Poetry The texts that we choose to study are selected with our children in mind. Considering the diverse backgrounds and cultures of the students we ensure that we include texts and schemes of work that reflect their cultural sphere as well as giving them access to classic literature. This ensures a wide coverage of materials which is essential preparation for the SATS Examinations which are taken at the end of Key Stage 3. At GCSE we offer a two year course in English. The first year is dedicated to ensuring that the students complete 4 pieces of coursework and thus accumulating 40% of their overall mark for GCSE. A further 20% of this mark is for their speaking and listening contributions. The final year is focussed on studying and preparation for their written exam by analysing among other things, poetry from other cultures and traditions. Students will also be given the opportunity to take another GCSE in Literature. If students chose to follow this curriculum, they must complete 3 pieces of coursework: Shakespeare, pre 1914 prose and 21st Century Drama which accounts for 30% of their overall mark. The written exam marks the students’ ability to analyse poetry and prose from recognised literary figures. In addition to all this, we offer English and Literature at AS/2 Level, a course which gives students the opportunity to continue developing their appreciation of literature and explore the richness of language in greater depth.A Guide For Parents On Helping Your Child Revise For The English Exams
