The Advanced level examination is in two parts:

  • Advanced Subsidiary (AS) 50% of the total award

  • Advanced (A2) 50% of the whole award

AS English Literature builds on skills, knowledge and understanding previously gained at GCSE. The course involves wide, intensive reading to supplement research and essay work. Our aim is to foster awareness of the English Literary canon in the wider cultural context of world literature, and therefore emphasis is placed upon cross-curricular study and so work from other disciplines is often drawn upon. Discursive skills are developed alongside communication and IT key skills in both oral participation within class and within structured comparative essays. At the end of the course students would be able to write confidently with a high level of understanding, creativity, familiarity and critical ability; using the appropriate register. The course is taught by two teachers and involves group work, whole class teaching and directed research.

Students undertake AQA NEAB Specification B criteria.
