English

Key Stage 3 - Year 9

All work this year is centred on preparation for the SATs.  Macbeth is currently studied for the Shakespeare paper of the SATs exam and a range of non-fiction and fiction texts are studied for the reading and writing papers. 

Key Dates

English SATs Exam dates - Tuesday 3rd May and Friday 6th May.

 

Autumn

Novel – a novel is read and discussed in class. Language features are considered and an essay is written analysing some aspect or theme of the novel.  The work completed around the novel will relate to skills and knowledge needed for the SATs exam.

 

Shakespeare - The play Macbeth by William Shakespeare is studied and pupils are prepared for the key scenes.  This year the key scenes which will be examined from Macbeth are: 

  • Act 2 scene 1

  • And Act 5 scenes 3, 4 and 5

Pupils will have to write an essay in the exam on an aspect from these scenes.

Spring

SATs preparation - Reading Paper.  Pupils work on their reading skills by exploring a wide range of non-fiction and fiction texts linked to the four triplets which are: Imagine-Explore-Entertain; Persuade-Argue-Advise; Inform-Explain-Describe; Analyse-Comment-Review. 

SATs preparation - Writing paper.  Pupils are taught the skills needed to write in a variety of styles required by the writing triplets.

Summer

SATs Revision and Preparation.

Media:

Students will develop their ability to read and analyse moving image, music or magazine articles. Some groups will be working to produce a magazine for a specific audience, and other groups will be developing their understanding of the requirements for GCSE media.
