EnglishKey Stage 3 - Year 8In Year 8 particular emphasis is placed on pupils' writing skills. They learn how to vary sentence lengths for effect and use complex sentences. Key Dates | | End of Year Exams - 23-27 May 2005 |
Autumn | | Creative writing – As Halloween is around the corner, students are working on ghost stories. Alongside this they will read a selection of spooky novels such as ‘Whispers in the Graveyard’ and ‘The Red Room’ by HG Wells. Drama - Students will read the plays ‘Burning Everest and ‘Mariza’s Story’, both deal with the plight of displaced children, one is set in England and the other on the streets of Brazil. Students will show their understanding of the themes through their written work and their speaking and listening tasks. | Spring | | Poetry – Students are exposed to a variety of poetic styles and create their own anthology collating all of their work. They will look at sonnets, haikus, limericks, odes, shape and acrostic poems and will show an understanding of their individual styles and structures. The students will also build upon their knowledge of literary devices and their uses. Developing Skills - A short unit of work such as Mini sagas will take place. The focus is on developing vocabulary. | Summer | | Novel – the students have a choice of novels. These include ‘The Chinese Cinderella’ ‘Mac B’ ‘Stone Cold’ and ‘Face’ Media – The students look at the language of the media through analysing newspapers. This unit of work is particularly important at giving the students a foundation for understanding the reading and response section of their SATs and their GCSE paper. | | | Speaking and Listening is an integral part of all of the units of work and students will be given tasks to assess their ability to: discuss, argue, persuade, explain, describe, narrate, explore, analyse and imagine. |
