English

Key Stage 3 - Year 7

Year 7 is an exciting and challenging year which builds carefully on the knowledge and understanding pupils have gained in year 6.

Key Dates

September – reading and writing assessment
End of Year Exams - 23-27 May 2005

Autumn

Creative writing – students aim to write for a specific audience when writing their autobiographies. Alongside this, they will be reading examples from published Autobiographies including ‘Coming to England’ by Floella Benjamin and extracts from ‘Boy’ By Roald Dahl.

Drama - Students will read a play by Dickens and develop their understanding of the dramatic qualities involved as well as show an understanding of the social, historical and cultural context.

Spring

Poetry – Ballads are studied.  Poetic techniques, such as rhyme and rhythm, are introduced. We also cover the non- fiction component by researching a current news item. Pupils will also write their own modern day ballad. They will also be looking at the purpose of literary devices within poetry.

Project and group work as well as creative writing and display skills will be studied.

Summer

Novel – the students have a choice of novels. These include ‘Two Weeks with the Queen’ by Morris Gleitzman, ‘Journey to the River Sea’ and ‘Stormbreaker’

Media – The students look at the concepts behind advertising and produce their own adverts. They also do the more difficult task of media analysis.

Speaking and Listening is an integral part of all of the units of work and students will be given tasks to assess their ability to: discuss, argue, persuade, explain, describe, narrate, explore, analyse and imagine.
