Key Stage 4 - Year 10

Year 10 works to prepare students for year 11 and GCSE exams with a series of short design and make projects that look at helping the student to more fully understand their chosen area.

What ever the choice, all students will be expected to produce a folder of course work that would include a brief and evaluation of there final design. Supporting this, will also be a practical piece of work. This depending on the chosen discipline could be anything from a model of the interior of a restaurant, a finally prepared meal, and a dress or s storage unit for home. Finally all students sit a written exam.

One of the highlights of this time is the year 11 fashion show organised by the Textiles department. This is a real show case of fine talent and commitment by all involved and allows students to demonstrate some of the Academy’s finest qualities of multicultural diversity, and is enjoyed by all.

Resistant Materials 1

Kraft Knife

All students will design and make a model of a craft knife In this project we look at ergonomics and its importance to creating successful products  the project asks the students to develop a design based on research of existing products. All the skills used are based on shaping and modelling in foam. Tools used include Craft knives, files, Scribe, Coping saw, Hegnor, Drilling machine.

Small Clock

All students will design and make a small clock with a working mechanism supplied by the school. The body of the clock will be made of MDF. Design input will be limited, instead students will be asked to fallow set instructions as accurately as possible.

Craft Knife Casting

We have casting facility within the workshop that we hope to soon have up and running. This would allow us to take our craft knife designs and sand cast them in aluminium giving students a much better understanding of manufacturing and small scale casting.

Pencil Box

All students will make a pencil box out of Pine wood.

The box has a sliding lid and is constructed using four different wood joints, Lap, Dove tail, Box joint and Doweled joint.

This reminds students of basic jointing methods and is the final workshop project of year 10 before starting their final project for year 11 and GCSE.

Food Technology

During key stage 4 pupils take part in design and make it projects that are linked to their own interests, industrial practices.

The pupils have made their option to undertake GCSE Food Technology. In the first year, , the pupils are taught systems and control and industrial practices.
This is seen as a manufacturing unit of work outlines by AQA.

Focused research tasks provide opportunities to practise presentation skills. The results of the research help the pupils in the development of a new product.
The coursework involved four major projects of which each project last 6-8 weeks
