Key Stage 3 - Year 9

Year 9     Term 1 Myth and Fantasy

 

About the unit

In this unit, pupils explore and use natural and other materials to construct artworks which represent a view of their beliefs and interpretations of myth and fantasy. They analyse examples of work from different times and cultures where ideas, beliefs and values are shared and communicated through art, craft and design. The work of the Surrealist and Symbolist movements will be investigated through gallery visits.

Expectations

At the end of this unit

Pupils will: explore ideas and select visual and other information;
use this information in developing their work; manipulate materials and processes to communicate ideas and meanings in an individual design incorporating symbolism; match visual and tactile qualities to their intentions; draw up an action plan for improving on their initial designs; analyse and comment on the ideas, methods and approaches in traditional art and culture and in contemporary work; adapt and refine their work to reflect its purpose and meaning

 

Year 9    Term 2 Animating art

About the unit

In this unit, pupils explore the use of the moving image to communicate ideas about particular genres or styles of art. They analyse paintings, films, cartoons, illustrations, digital images, photographs and images from contemporary visual culture. They learn how to represent ideas and values using the moving image. They make connections between abstract expressionism, expressionism and pop art of the 1960s and contemporary moving images.

At the end of this unit

Pupils will: explore ideas and make moving images in response to an artist’s work or a particular genre or style of art; research contemporary paintings and film in print, digital and video form; organise and use visual and other information in their work; manipulate media to convey their ideas; analyse and comment on their own and others’ images and relate this to what was intended; adapt their work to refine their own ideas and intentions

 

Year 9    Term 3 Change your style

About the unit

This unit is the last unit at key stage 3 and it is an opportunity for pupils to work in a range of media and to begin preparing for key stage 4.  In this unit, pupils explore contemporary design and the ways in which artists take ideas from the work of others and synthesize these into new creative forms. They develop their own ideas and design and may make textiles, ceramic forms, three-dimensional construction or body adornment. They investigate the influence of art from different cultures and traditions on fashion and design.
