Key Stage 3 - Year 8Year 8 Term 1 Self Image About the unit In this unit, pupils explore their personal identity as a starting point. They create images that reflect their ideas of themselves, working from observation, memory and imagination. They develop skills using traditional materials and processes and have the opportunity to combine traditional and digital media. They learn about the ideas, methods and approaches used by other artists who have made images of themselves and/or portrayed others. Expectations At the end of this unitPupils will: explore ideas and collect visual and other information on the theme of identity to help them develop their work; use their knowledge and understanding of materials and processes, combining and organising visual and tactile qualities to communicate ideas and feelings about their identity; compare and comment on ideas, methods and approaches used in their own and other people’s self-portrait work, and relate these to the context in which the work was made; adapt and improve their work to realise their own intentions Year 8 Term 2 Personal places, public spacesAbout the unit In this unit, pupils explore examples of arts in public places. Pupils will investigate and record their own personal places. They will research the different ways in which ideas, beliefs and values are represented and shared in their local area and in different times and cultures, including contemporary modern practice. They explore ways of representing their own ideas and then collaborate with others to make a mural or a three-dimensional form for a specific location. ExpectationsAt the end of this unitPupils will: explore ideas about their local area; assess visual and other information, including modernist works and contemporary visual culture; use this information to develop ideas, taking account of purpose and audience; manipulate materials and processes and analyse outcomes; interpret visual and tactile qualities to communicate ideas and meanings and realise their intentions in a relief panel or a three-dimensional form; analyse and comment on how ideas and meanings about the local area are conveyed in their own and others’ work; explain how their understanding of the context affects their views and practice  Year 8 Term 3 Life eventsIn this unit, pupils explore ideas and feelings about an event in their own life as the starting point for image making. They analyse paintings, prints, photographs and digital images, including examples of photojournalism, to learn how visual qualities can be manipulated to evoke strong reactions and to represent ideas, beliefs and values. They make connections between eighteenth- and nineteenth-century paintings and contemporary visual culture. At the end of this unit Pupils will: explore ideas and assess a number of narrative images, including historical paintings and photographic imagery in print and digital form; use this information to develop their ideas, taking account of audience and purpose; manipulate materials and processes and analyse outcomes; interpret visual qualities to create an image that communicates a personal response to a significant experience or event and realise their intentions; analyse and comment on the contexts of their own and others’ work; explain how their understanding of the context affects their views and practice
