Visual Arts

Our aim at Capital City Academy is to ensure that all our students receive an art rich education that is meaningful, inspiring and fulfilling. At its core it is our desire to nurture creativity and to instil the excitement about learning art. The curriculum encompasses the skills and knowledge required to develop confidence and understanding of the different art specialisms. We seek to challenge and support our students to grow to become independent competent young artists. We provide a stimulating practical learning environment for students to develop their own visual language promoting student wellbeing and  self-esteem in order  for students to have a better understanding of themselves and the society we live in.In the Capital City Classroom we provide maximum opportunities for all students to express their creative imagination as well as providing them with opportunities to practise and develop mastery skills within the key processes of art. We provide students with opportunities to experiment, invent and interpret works of art enabling students to appreciate practices of artists and cultures from the past and present. Lessons are designed to provide a supportive structure where students receive  regular diagnostic teacher feedback, peer assessment, self-assessment, and practical projects to ensure skills and knowledge are being explored through highly personal ways, increasing self reflection and independence. Creative methodologies are repeated to increase competency and to make sure high levels of progress for all students. Cross curricular connections are made in order to have  a positive impact on the development of every student, preparing them for life and the next phase of their education.

Catering is a fun, energetic and a rewarding subject. It is a chance to arm pupils with sensible, practical knowledge that they can take into the world and actually use. Pupils will learn how to cook great food that tastes amazing, see a big improvement in their confidence and skills, improve their knowledge on nutrition, meal planning and budgeting. Cooking and nutrition is without a doubt one of the most important things a person can ever learn!

The subject is designed to enable students to gain a good foundation of knowledge, understanding and skills that are required by the hospitality and Catering industry but also to keep them healthy and active throughout life.

We aim to develop a wide variety of practical skills, including food preparations and cooking skills, organisation, time management, planning, communication and problem solving.

Through study and practice students will learn not only the practical skills of catering and food preparation, but develop a wider understanding of the theory and science of the subject by studying the following topics:

  • All the different parts of the Hospitality and Catering Industry
  • Different types of hospitality and catering establishments and job roles
  • Different types of hospitality and catering provision for particular situations
  • Front of house and kitchen operations
  • The needs and requirements of customers
  • What makes hospitality and catering businesses successful
  • Issues related to nutrition and food safety
  • Plan, prepare, cook and serve a variety of nutritional dishes, in a safe and hygienic manner, that are suitable for different situations and customer needs and requirements.
