Posted on: 31/10/2022Year 10 Sam Shines in Hungary
CCA student, Year 10 Sam, impressed the recent European Youth Basketball League in Hungary.
The guard averaged 21 points and 9 rebounds, making the prestigious all-star 5 which is a huge accomplishment for any player. Leading the London Elite U15s team to a 2 win and 2 loss record in the EYBL, one of Europe’s best international leagues and a great opportunity for any player, not only for their basketball experience and exposure but for the learning and cultural opportunities.
For Sam to do so well in domestic competition is standard for him but for him to do it on an international stage is very impressive. It is testament to his commitment to developing. Sam will be one to watch in the years going forward!
Nathan to Play in GB American Football Team
Congratulations to Nathan who has been selected to play for the Great Britain American Football team. It is a fantastic achievement for this formidable sportsman.
Capital City Academy Schools Sports Partnership
The Capital School Sports Leaders have been working hard over this half term.
They have supported the running of:
- Year 5/6 Football Tournament
- Year 4/5 Highland Games
- Infant Sportshall Athletics Festival
- Tag Rugby League Year 5/6 Competition
- KS1 Football Festival.
Each event needed a variety of leadership skills, from officiating to coaching. The Sixth Form Leaders had a variety of prior experience, but all demonstrated the essential role model qualities needed. The Sports Leadership Programme at Capital helps develop valuable attributes from organisation, confidence, teamwork and so much more supporting “whole child” development.
The Year 12 Sports Leaders went over to Willesden Sports Centre to run the Infant Indoor Sportshall event. Over 180 children took part and the students received outstanding feedback from staff, pupils and the event manager.
The Sports Leaders are supporting the national health agenda of increasing activity and are ensuring a fun and positive first sporting experience for the Year 1 and 2 children offsite, increasing the likelihood of lifelong participation and love for sport/activity.
Year 5 and 6 football tournament
We were delighted to see the return of our annual Brent schools football tournament. On 30th September, 15 schools from across Brent came to the academy to compete. The tournament was for boys and girls from Year 5 and 6.
In partnership with QPR in the Community, the children were able to take part in three group games that then led to the knockout stages. We saw some wonderful football matches full of skill, movement, teamwork, and lots of smiles.
Congratulations to St. Robert Southwell for winning the tournament and qualifying to represent Brent at the QPR EFL Utilita Kids Cup in January.
In addition, runners up Oakington Manor & third place St Joseph's also qualified for the tournament in January.
Highland Games
On the 12th October the sports partnership hosted the Highland Games 2022 for pupils from Year 4 and 5 across Brent.
This event was aimed at children who find it difficult to engage in sport for several different reasons, and encourage them to try new activities, work as a team and learn new skills. The event offers children a non-competitive environment to try traditional Highland sports such as caber toss, tug of war and throwing events.
"Our children have had a fantastic time at this event trying many new activities. Lots of smiles and great to see the children working as a team. The teachers also enjoyed the tug of war." - B. Shinner, Teacher
Year 5 and 6 Tag Rugby Tournament
The Sports Partnership hosted the annual tag rugby league tournament at Capital City Academy on Monday 17th October. With the support of Matt from Saracens RFC, all schools were able to take part in several matches whilst being supported by our fantastic young leaders.
Results:
- Tag Rugby League champions - Maple Walk School
- 2nd - Sudbury School
- 3rd - Malorees School
Well done to all the schools who took part and their teachers for organising for the children to have this opportunity.
Infant Football Skills Festival
On Tuesday 18th October, the Sports Partnership invited our infant schools to come to Capital City Academy and take part in a morning of football skills for Year 1 and 2 children.
The children were able to take part in a number of different football skills games, fitness activities and team events. The children had a chance to practise shooting and ball control. The event finished with mini matches and was great to see so many children having fun.
Thank you to our fantastic sports leaders who helped to deliver the event and gave help and support to the young children. It really made all the difference to this event.
Ms Desmond, one of the teachers, said: ‘Thank you so much for this event our children love coming and they had so much fun. The leaders are great too’.
