World Book Day

Posted on: 04/03/2022

In recognition of the strong correlation between a child’s reading age and their average GCSE grade, all Capital’s students in years 7-9 now read a book for half an hour every morning with the Learning Advisor. We now have 24 students in Years 7 and 8 with a reading age of 17 or above - a phenomenal achievement which means that they are reading at least four years ahead of the expected level!

Meanwhile, we used World Book Day as an opportunity to reward them with a virtual creative writing workshop provided by the Arvon Foundation. After a few technical issues, which were quickly resolved by Amin in Year 7, the students were entertained by poet and performer Matt Abbott, the author of ‘A Hurricane in my Head’.

We will be monitoring this cohort’s progress closely in the years to come, to ensure that they receive all the support they need to continue to excel.
