Capital City Academy Goes Green!

Posted on: 04/05/2021

Plans are afoot for rooftop solar panels to provide clean, green electricity for the school. A 300 kWp solar PV array is to be installed on Capital City Academy’s roof. This equates to 800 panels and will generate some 263 MWh of electricity per annum. Modelling suggests that this will supply between 25-30% of the school’s current annual consumption. This will enable the school not only to save around £10,000 per year on electricity, but to generate its own electricity from the sun, not by burning polluting fossil fuels.

The organisation managing this project is Brent Pure Energy (BPE), a not-for-profit Community Benefit Society, which has already installed solar panels on the roofs of Queens Park Community School (in August 2016) and Malorees Infant and Junior Schools (in March 2020).

BPE was formed by residents as a local response to the issue of Climate Change in the London Borough of Brent, with the following aims:

  • to engage the community
  • to support local schools
  • to generate renewable energy.

For this project, BPE plan to issue £190,000 of community shares to purchase the solar panels. You can participate by buying shares (minimum of £100). You would then automatically become a member of BPE with an equal say in the democratic process of the society irrespective of the amount of shares owned and you would receive interest (estimated at 4%) on your investment over the 20 year lifetime of the project. As an investor you would be able to see your investment in action every day on the roof of CCA generating electricity. At the end of 20 years the solar panels will belong to the school.

This is a win, win, win project as it combines cleaner, greener, cheaper energy, local community interaction and useful scientific teaching information for CCA. If you would like to know more please go to the BPE website where there is a contact form. Full details of the Community Share Offer will then be sent to you. The share offer is subject to risks and the return on investment is not guaranteed.

There will be a fundraising launch event soon on Zoom where you can learn more and ask questions. The launch event sign-up details will be on the school and BPE websites.
