Ahmed - winner of the William Soutar Writing Prize 2020Posted on: 08/02/2021
A massive congratulations to the poetry champion Ahmed, who won the William Soutar Writing Prize for 2020. This was a national competition and over 700 people voted for their favourite entrant before selecting Ahmed as the final winner. The judges noted that Ahmed’s wonderful spoken word poem, 'When Coronavirus Started', really stood out from the rest. Asif Khan, the judge of the competition commented: “I was impressed by Ahmed’s turn of phrase and lyricism.”
Here is the link to watch the performance of the poem.
Ahmed began writing this poem during a PSHE lesson about ways of dealing with coronavirus. His poem is a testament to the idea that writing creatively is a brilliant outlet to express ourselves during these difficult circumstances. It is also an encapsulation of the many creative talents that our Capital students possess. Ahmed has received a hamper of books and stationery to support him to develop his creative writing skills.
We look forward to reading many more of Ahmed’s Creative Writing pieces.
