Monthly feature: meet some of our Capital staff teamPosted on: 02/10/2019
Full name: Kareen White
Current job title: Assistant Principal
Where did you grow up? I grew up in South Wales, in a valley called the Ebbw Valley. Wales is a beautiful country but I couldn’t wait to leave it when I was 18!
What was your favourite subject at school? My favourite subject at school was English - not German at all! I loved all the reading and the writing in English but I found German quite hard which was a bit embarrassing because everyone knew my mother was German.
What university did you go to and what did you study? I went to Warwick University, at first to study Psychology but in my second year I changed to German (because I wasn’t very good at the statistics in Psychology).
What made you decide to go into teaching? I didn’t know which job I wanted to do when I left university and only discovered I enjoyed teaching accidentally by teaching English as a Foreign Language one summer.
What are your hobbies outside of work? When I’m not at work, I like to spend time with friends and family. I enjoy cooking - and eating! I also enjoy yoga and gym classes.
What encouraged you to apply to work at Capital? I applied to work at CCA because I was attracted to the challenge of building a new MFL department, almost from scratch. I’m very proud of our department and all the achievements of the students who’ve enjoyed learning languages with us.
What have been some of your highlights? There are too many to mention but the school trips over the years have always been great fun and being with the A Level students in Berlin, listening to them speaking German confidently and fluently is a real highlight.
