Minnesota House Representative, Ilham Omar visits CapitalPosted on: 04/05/2018
Students from Capital and the local community welcomed Ilham Omar, a Somali-American politician from Minnesota. She is currently a House Representative in the state of Minnesota and member of the Civil Law & Data Practices Policy, Higher Education & Career Readiness Policy & Finance, and State Government Finance Committees.
Among the speakers, Aliya (Year 12 student) at Capital, read a beautiful poem receiving a large ovation and acknowledgement.
Ilahm, who was accompanied by her husband, gave an eloquent speech explaining how she became the first Somali-American Muslim legislator elected to office in the United States. She encouraged the youth that they can achieve anything they aim to and work for. She also explained how much support she received from the volunteers who supported her on her stand on issues.
It was a very vibrant and lively meeting which will have a long lasting impact on some young people who attended the event. Time Magazine named Omar among its "Firsts: Women who are changing the world" - a special project on 46 women who have broken barriers in their respective disciplines, and featured her on the cover of its September 18 issue.
